Press Release

The film 'Rehearsing the Museum' combines the idea of financial speculation with speculative fiction as an artistic tool, structured as a distributed cabinet of curiosities. Collaboratively scripted with the Taiwanese Beijing-based writer Zian Chen, the work follows on from Lewandowska’s two-year research project at the Asia Art Archive in Hong Kong. Filmed in Bergen, Shanghai and Beijing, and containing additional archival footage, the narrative unfolds through a dialogue between two women whose diverse backgrounds and aspirations expose sensitivities around property development and the contested ownership of museum artifacts. They reflect on the origins of the market for contemporary Chinese art, the museum boom, and the increasing pressure western museums are experiencing from strong economies, such as China, to face post-colonial consequences, linked to unresolved local histories.

Marysia Lewandowska is a Polish-born London-based artist. Research plays a central role in her practice, often resulting in public art projects, publications, films and installation works, commissioned, exhibited and collected across public institutions in Europe at Tate Modern (UK), Moderna Museet (SE), Muzeum Sztuki (PL), New Museum (USA) and more recently in China at Osage Gallery, Shanghai and K11 Chi Art Space, Hong Kong. She was a Professor of Art in the Public Realm at Konstfack in Stockholm 2003-2013, where she established ‘Timeline: Artists’ Film and Video Archive‘. Between 2014-16 she was based in Hong Kong undertaking a Visiting Professorship at the Chinese University and as Artist in Residence at the Asia Art Archive.
